These easy steps will guide you through the basics needed to complete a generic piñata. Use your favorite paper mache technique to create a form large enough to hold quantities of candy. Prepare to transform this shape into a stuffable, hanging and colorful ornament which will delight the hearts of children and adults alike.
You will need...
- Paper (newsprint or recycled)
- Plastic bag
- Masking tape
- Liquid starch (or prefered medium)
- Bleed resistant crepe paper or craft tisue
- Wire (medium gauge)
- White craft glue (Elmer's or prefered brand)
- Sturdy rope (approx. 5 feet long)
- Piñata stick (wooden broom handle)
- Blind fold
Form
Form an object of choice by using stylized shapes. This means shapes like ovals, circles, crescents, etc. First timers, keep it simple with themes such as or fruit or vegetables.

Stuff crumpled paper inside of a plastic bag and squeeze into shape, almost like a pillow casing. Pack it tightly. Leave the bag partially open in order for the air to escape.
Work your way down the bag by squeezing towards the opening. Add more paper if necessary. This should release any remaining air.

Tape over the plastic to secure the shape.
Application
Wrap several lengths of sturdy wire around the portion of the object, where it will hang when positioned. Form a tight loop by twisting it in place. Check to make sure it is sturdy.

Next, cover your shape with a large sheet of paper and masking tape. This will cover the plastic and provide a surface for attaching the mache'. It is now ready to coat.
