Chalk Whitening

Hi everyone, I am Annie. I do not have a gallery yet but I am working on it. I live in Yorkshire in the UK and am looking for a supplier of chalk/whitening. If anyone knows where I can source it I would be extremely grateful.

Re: Chalk Whitening

Do they have Sherwin Williams Paint stores in the UK? I buy mine through them.  50lb bags about $25 US. Maybe look at some of the better paint stores around. I had to have them special order it for me, but it has been worth it!

Re: Chalk Whitening

Two common places to find it are at shops that deal with potter supplies (clays and glazes), and garden shops as a soil amendment.  Both of these may best know it as calcium carbonate, but you can toss "chalk" and "whiting" at them, too.  They should recognize at least one of the names.

Re: Chalk Whitening

Check to see if there are any chalk quarries in your area.  Being Yorkshire, I doubt it - but who knows.  You are, of course, talking calcium carbonate.  Omya is one firm that produces a wonderful, fine powdered chalk.  I was lucky enough to get a sample some time ago that has lasted me a very long time.  Unfortunately, they only supply in large quantities (like a hundredweight!) but you have one of their units not too far from you . . .

Re: Chalk Whitening

Thank you dopaper. 100lbs is too much for me right now, as enthusiastic as I am, but it is good to actually know where I can get it and I wil see if they will let me have a smaller amount. As for quarries, well we have the Yorkshire Wolds. I am more familiar with the Lincolnshire Wolds quarries though as I was brought up there. I was tempted recently on a family trip to visit the quarry to scrounge, maybe that is the answer.
Thanks again
