Anyone know how to make very brittle paper mache?

Hi All,

Brand new to paper mache. Was looking to learn how to make a paper mache that is very brittle. I would like to have it powder and poof into dust when thrown at a wall or dropped.

Any and all knowledge appreciated! smile

Absolutely not.  I think papier mâché is entirely wrong for this sort of thing.

Thanks for your insight. What do you think would be more suited for this desired performance?

Papier mache wouldn't do for that, even if you just formed it with water, and no glue.

If you're looking for a material that will break up completely into dust, I can't imagine what you could use for that.

I know they make those novelty golf balls that explode into dust when you hit them.  I've never made anything like what you're describing, but, if I had to guess, I'd say try making a hollow mold and than packing it tightly with some kind of powdery substance that is able to adhere to itself enough to maintain its form but that will crumble apart when struck sharply.

On the other hand, you COULD make a small papier mache pinata, with REALLY thin walls, put flour or something like that inside of it, and it would explode/rupture when thrown at a solid surface.

Perhaps parafin treated talc rammed into a form (the stuff is used to ease slides and the like), or powdered sugar- the sweet powder might be compressed into a plaster mold, which then could be wet to promote crusting...

If I'm not wrong, Papier mache is not for that kind of purpose
