About the Artist: Born in 1909 to German paper-clip heirs, paper mache became a hobby for him at a young age. Developments of his talent were hindered by the great paper shortage of 1918. For years, this artist was forced to forgo using paper products in his work. The sloppy, unfinished pieces made simply of “mache” did not garner much acclaim from local craft-show attendees who were not impressed by painted lumps of glue. Upon reaching pubescence in 1922 at the age of 13, the artist began growing a beard. Harvests from this long red beard gave much needed structure to the “mache” pieces making him the world’s first Human-Hair-Mache artist. When the paper shortage finally broke in late 1926, the artist returned to making sculpture with traditional paper items.
To this day, despite being penniless and partially blind from adverse reactions to white glue, the artist continues to work in the paper arts often incorporating fabric, cigarettes, wood, metal, juice, cereal, clay, a toilet, his cat, and guitar strings.
